Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs: Some Important Facts

Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs: Some Important Facts
CFLs or the Compact Fluorescent Lights are eco-friendly lighting options that offer more light spending less energy compared to the traditional incandescent light bulbs. The CFLs are known to last ten times longer, compared to the incandescent bulbs and use 75% less energy. The CFLs emit light when electric current is passed through tubes containing mercury and argon vapor. The passing of these vapors results in appearance of invisible ultraviolet lights to stimulate phosphor in the tubes. This in turn produces visible light. On the other hand, light production in the incandescent bulbs occurs by sending electric current through the wire filaments. Reports from Energy Star suggest that a CFL uses 66% to 75% less energy compared to a traditional incandescent bulb. Energy Star has also reported that CFLs last 6-10 times more than the traditional lighting equipments. Light  [...]

Tips for Conserving Water

Tips for Conserving Water
Many scientists have predicted that the biggest challenge faced by the world during the upcoming decade would be water shortage. Water crisis will be triggered by factors like increase in global population, climatic changes etc. This prediction of the scientists has made conserving water extremely important. In this article we have offered some useful tips for conserving water:
  • Often a lot of water passes through the leaky toilets and faucets; the first step of water conservation is looking for such leaks and fixing them immediately.
  • You can replace your older toilet with a new low-flush model. The toilets manufactured before 1992 are generally less efficient and use up a minimum of 3 gallons water with every flush. The toilets of today have much higher efficiency; the ones that come with ‘WaterSense’ written on them use a maximum of 1.28 gallons water in every flush.
  • Every faucet in your household must have aerators. Have a look at your showerhead. If you find that the shower is filling up a 1 gallon bucket within 20 seconds, you should change your showerhead and use any of the low-flow versions.
  • Many of us end up wasting a lot of water while watering our lawn. Installation of drip irrigation systems can stop us from doing so. This system delivers water to the grasses directly; as a result the amount of water wasted because of evaporation or wind gets minimized significantly.
  • While performing actions like shaving or brushing the teeth never forget turning off the faucet. Every faucet of your household must stay turned off when they are not used actively. Statistics offered by EPA suggest that turning off the faucet while brushing can conserve as much as 8 gallons water in a day.
  • Instead of taking baths, take showers. You will need almost 70 gallons water for filling a bath, whereas a 5-minute shower will only make you use 10-25 gallons.

Teaching Children to Conserve Energy

Teaching Children to Conserve Energy
Majority of us are aware of the importance of conserving the natural resources and energy. We are also aware of the fact that we can save a significant amount of money through conservation of energy. Some of the common use of energy is for cooling and heating of our abodes, for transportation and for recreation of different kinds. In this article, we have discussed about ways of teaching our children how to conserve energy. As a guiding parent, you must ensure that you practice the things you are preaching. Parents must act as good examples for their children. This way, they can make the children follow their good actions. If you instruct them to turn off the lights, they will always wait for your instruction; but if they see you switching off the light before leaving a room, they will do the same themselves.

Working Towards a Greener Future—literally- Part 1

Working Towards a Greener Future—literally- Part 1
There have been a lot of questions and answers that have been spreading all over the country about green jobs. However, the number of questions always seems to overshadow the number of answers, like is characteristic of the human psyche. To speak in the simplest and clearest of words, a green job is a job or an employment opportunity that not only works towards the building of a stronger economic structure for the country, but also, at the same time looks at ways in which the environment would be affected the least while doing so. Okay, fine. Now that you have got the basic idea of what a green job is, the plethora of questions follow up: What kind of work does one do when one has a green job? Is it difficult to do a green job? Are the rewards good? Do a lot of people do these jobs, and so on and so forth. See, did we not tell you that there many questions regarding green employment? There, another question! Let us just get to providing answers these questions. One of the many jobs  [...]

Afforestation and Reforestation

Afforestation and Reforestation
No matter where you live on the planet, imagine how the same place would have been two hundred years ago. In all probability, the land that you stand on was a deep forest, with a whole lot of animal and plant life all around. The trees overhead would stop the light from reaching the floor. Walking through such land in the rains would be akin to walking in marshlands. Birds would be chirping all around, as dew collected early in the morning. The air that you would breathe would be as pure as you could imagine. Race back to our time now. The most forest we see is a few miles en route our vacation in the hills. The only plants you see are the ones you water every morning and night, the only animals, your pets or strays. The trees have been replaced by tall skyscrapers that dot skylines everywhere. The ground is so hard, your feet ache. The walk in the rain is now, best given a miss, for fear of being drenched in chemicals. The birds have just gone. And lets not even start about the air. So,  [...]

Many Species. One Planet. One Future. Some information

Many Species. One Planet. One Future. Some information
1.       There are about 5 million to 100 million or so species on the Planet Earth. Human beings are just one of them. 2.       Scientists, so far, know of only 2 million species that have been identified, which means, there is a huge amount of species that share this planet with us as their home and we do not know about them. 3.       Human beings, are one of the species among the whole universe of the species whose population is growing at an accelerated rate, sadly, costing the lives of others. Many species of flora and fauna are endangered today and are becoming rarer and extinct with each passing day. 4.       About 17,291 species are endangered to the point of extinction, of which are many we do not know anything about. Many are disappearing before they are discovered. 5.       Human activities have a great role to play in this catastrophe. Our faulty ways of development has resulted in a loss of forests, half of the wetlands of the world  [...]

A bit about WED – World Environment Day

A bit about WED – World Environment Day
June 5 is a very significant date in the calendar of environmental events. It was on this date, in the year 1972, that the United Nations General Assembly, or the UNGA, established the World Environment Day or WED, in short. This was done during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, over 12 days (from 5th to the 6th of June). On the very day, the UNGA adopted the resolution of the creation of the United Nationas Environment Programme or the UNEP. June 5, 2010, marks the 37th celebration of the World Environment Day across the Globe. Each year, the United Nations picks up a different and a unique city as a host for the day’s celebrations. The WED also goes by a certain theme each year, depending on what aspect of the environment needs utmost attention in that particular year. To commemorate the World Environment Day, the entire week in which June 5 falls is booked with international exhibitions and  [...]

Conservation of Biodiversity – Ten reasons why we need it.

Conservation of Biodiversity – Ten reasons why we need it.
1.    Food security Just about 20 species of biodiversities supply about 90 per cent of the food in the world. The major food crops like corn, wheat, soybeans etc depend on new strains to tackle and survive the evolving diseases and pests. If this balance is lost, food security will be affected. For instance, milpila, a wild variety of corn is highly disease-resistant and is the only perennial in the corn family. If it could be blended with domestic corn proportionately, corn production will get a boost and food security can be strengthened. 2.    Health A number of medicines used for curing many ailments come from different species of the biodiversities. The list of medicinal drugs are derived from wild species includes, aspirin for pain relief from meadowsweet, digitoxin for cardiac treatment from common foxglove, penicillin for antibiotics from penicilium fungi, L-dopa for Parkinson’s disease from velvet bean, quinine for malaria from yellow cinchona and  [...]
