Can We Stop Global Warming? – a question demanding answers

Can We Stop Global Warming? – a question demanding answers
“Can we stop global warming?” If William Shakespeare were an author in our time, this would probably be the question that preceded, probably the most famous line he ever came up with: “To be or not to be, that is the question…” Then again, coming to realize that global warming is probably one of the worst phenomenons to have affected our planet, the answer to the question is short, simple, and possibly one that would not be too pleasing: no. No, we cannot by any standard, stop the process of global warming. Whether some one tells you this in a single word or makes use of the most complex of processes and the longest of theories, the reality remains the same, that global warming cannot be possibly be stopped… If we really are asking “Can we Stop Global Warming?”, then we must realize that we possibly are too late to change the answer. The rest of this article will see that despite the many controversies that  [...]

Al Gore Global Warming: His Impact

Al Gore Global Warming: His Impact
Global warming is a modern phenomenon where characterized by an increase in the atmosphere’s average temperature. The temperature at the oceans, too, is projected to rise. An increase in the average temperature of the earth may lead to drastic alterations. The sea levels may rise. The quantity of precipitation and its model may also change. Al Gore global warming is a recent phenomenon. These alterations in temperature may increase the incidence and concentration of natural disasters, such as floods, heat waves, famines, cyclones, and storms. There may be other costs as well related to lower yields in farming, withdrawal of glaciers, reduction in summer stream flows, and extinction of various species. Al Gore is the foremost US politician to raise an alarm about global warming hazards. An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary related to Al Gore global warming. He has also written a book on global warming. His advice is archived. He has stated  [...]

Antarctica Global Warming—True or False?

Antarctica Global Warming—True or False?
When we think about Antarctica global warming, we suddenly get into our minds images of the ice melt off as if it were be taken closer to the surface of the sun itself. True, there is a large amount of ice that melts each year in the region. However, what is not true is the belief that the shelves of ice are all going to disappear before we even know it. Things may not be as safe as we think they are concerning the ice of Antarctica, but nonetheless there is still time to worry about all the natural ice on our planet disappearing. In fact, the summer in the continent of Antarctica in the previous year saw a much lesser melting of ice than has been observed for the last thirty ears or so. This knowledge has been procured from satellite information that has been gathered on different regions of the continent. This is indeed great proof that global warming has not managed to have a complete grasp on the ice shelves and so, if there were ever a time to do away with the present  [...]

Facts of global warming : The causes and concerns

Facts of global warming : The causes and concerns
Throughout the long history of our planet Earth, there has been incessant change in the temperature of our planet, with sometimes, the temperatures soaring very high, and at some other times, going so low, that again it is not possible for life to sustain itself. One of the reasons for this change in hot and cold patterns on the planet is that the Earth has been receiving more heat or less heat depending on slight shifts that are happening in the orbits of the different planets. However, with the passage of time, and especially in the last century or so, there has been a new phenomenon that has been changing the temperatures on the planet, a phenomenon that is changing, by itself the climatic patterns on the planet. This phenomenon is humanity itself, and the problem it is causing, or rather aggravating, for quite some time now, is that of

The need of the Hour: Knowing our Facts

The need of the Hour: Knowing our Facts
One of the most heavily debated and a controversial topic that is hounding people all over the world is the one concerning global warming. There area great many people who believe that global warming is, in the span of time, going to lead to the end of the world. However, there are a great number of people who belong to a group that believes that global warming is a total myth, with no amount of proof being sufficient to prove its existence. The deal remains that if global warming is a myth, then we do not really have anything to worry about. However, if the myth about global warming is well, not a myth, then we are in a great deal of trouble. Here are a few facts that would definitely be of use if we were indeed up against this great monster called global warming. The Earth, as we know it, is undergoing rapid change, a change so rapid that it cannot be termed normal according to natural standards. This is why global warming is considered one of the main reasons why we are living in  [...]

Filling in on the Landfill

Filling in on the Landfill
The oldest form of management of waste is the use of a landfill. The most common method employed involves the digging of a trench, compacting of waste material, transfer of the waste into the trench and finally layers of soil topping it. While it is the most simplest form of getting rid of waste, it also leads to an entire host of problems. Some of the most dangerous situations that arise because of landfills are also life threatening. Here are a few of them... 1.    Since landfill methods employ the burial of waste material into the ground, there is always the possibility of groundwater sources getting contaminated. Given, the nature of the material deposited, the contamination of water could have an adverse effect on the inhabitants and animal/plant life in the vicinity. 2.    Wherever landfills are being used, the quality of the soil is degraded almost instantaneously. This leads to further problems like the loose setting of soil, which eventually could give way to tremors  [...]

Recycling Old Computers To Fuel Your Cars?

Recycling Old Computers To Fuel Your Cars?
When scientists and experts are looking for alternative sources of energy, some unexpected sources have been coming up to the surface. As per some reports, researches, some two years back, by the scientists in Turkey and Romania, showed that fuels and other products for raw materials could be derived from the circuit boards of your computer. Even in the United States of America, since some years now, scientists have been exploring ways to obtained oil from the circuit boards after removing the toxins and the flame retardants. As per a United Nations Environment Programme or UNEP – 'Recycling from e-waste to Resources', released earlier this year, the electronic waste was growing up by about 40 million tons annually around the globe. This report too, mentioned that the circuit boards from old computers be used to extract oil. The old computers and laptops form a big chunk of the e-waste produced. Hence there is a need for recycling old computers. Utilizing them  [...]

Promise of green jobs being viewed with cynicism

Promise of green jobs being viewed with cynicism
In January 2010, President Barack Obama, reportedly pledge to create not less than 17000 green jobs – jobs that are associated with new environment-friendly technologies…. In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that around jobs close to a figure of 70,000 would be created via the new off-shore wind turbines that are being set up Around the world elsewhere, countries are introducing subsidies in green technologies or giving financial aid to investment in renewable sources of energy so as to invite more  and more investment in these sectors which would there by create job opportunities in the respective countries… What would these green jobs be to start with? Jobs in the clean energy sector created will be that of scientists, engineers and large scale entry level jobs such as laborers, welders, dispatchers and carpenters among others. The  [...]

The IPCC Controversy

The IPCC Controversy
Controversial conclusions of the IPCC Report In its fourth assessment report released in 2007, the International Panel of Climate Change, a United Nations Body, under Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, the Himalayan Glaciers would vanish by 2035, which means by the time your new-born child is 25! The report also says that the 3,500 of Himalayan glaciers cover about 5, 00,000 square kilometers while the reality is that cover 33,050 square kilometers only. A retreat of the Pindari glacier, in this report has been given as 135.2 meters, while another data has established this rate as 23.47 meters. The IPCC has also predicted that about 40 per cent of the rainforests in the Amazon region could react drastically even to a slight change in precipitation. These statements made by IPCC have been proved as errors by counter reports and studies. This has also questioned the credibility of both the UN Body as well as R.K. Pachauri. The latter shared the Nobel Prize in 2007 with Al Gore.

Problems with the Concept of Hot Spot

Problems with the Concept of Hot Spot
Until the Biodiversity Hot Spots were not identified, scientists didn’t know how to go about conserving the depleting biodiversities and which regions to focus on as a priority basis. While Norman Myers, the ecologist from Britain, identified 34 Biodiversity Hot spots – areas that are rich in biodiversities and also are threatened, at times to the danger of extinction, there still are some problems. The concept of Biodiversity Hot Spots has not been accepted universally. As a result, convincing every scientist concerned about regarding these regions included as Hot Spots as a priority to get the attention of conservation processes has not been smooth. The concept has its share of criticisms too, even though on a minority basis. Following are the arguments against Hot Spots of Biodiversities, presented by papers such as Kareiva & Marvier. The 34 Hot Spots that have been selected for priority conservation do not represent other forms of species and  [...]
