Illegal mining managing their way out of scrutiny

The Supreme Court of India, which is the apex court of this country, held the stay on the mining operations of the French Company Lafarge in a recent judgement. Lafarge had till now not obtained any Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA. The cement company’s mining operations for limestone in the forests of Meghalaya was put under a stay because of environmental concerns.
As per some news reports, the Shella Action Committee, which is a body of villagers, had argued that the Lafarge Project in the Meghalaya Forests was fraudulent in more ways than one. This multinational company had obtained a false description of the land acquired for mining as barren when it was actually a dense forest. Lafarge had offered compensation for afforestation but EIA clearance has been declared as a must in the judgement by the Supreme Court of India.
